چکیده

In 1994 Alur and Dill introduced timed automata and showed that universality was undecidable there. Since then it has been shown that under certain restrictions the problem becomes decidable. But the frontier between decidability and undecidability is still vast. We aim at narrowing this gap considerably. Our main accomplishment is to prove that universality stays undecidable over weakly monotonic time when restricting to a single state, a single symbol and clock comparisons to 0 and 1 only. We further propose that over strongly monotonic time the problem stays undecidable for timed automata with one state and one symbol only.

Undecidability of Universality for Timed Automata with Minimal Resources

Timed automata were introduced by Alur and Dill in the early 1990s and have since become the most prominent modelling formalism for real-time systems. A fundamental limit to the algorithmic analysis of timed automata, however, results from the undecidability of the universality problem: does a given timed automaton accept every timed word? As a result, much research has focussed on attempting t...

Folk Theorems on the Determinization and Minimization of Timed Automata

Timed automata are known not to be complementable or determinizable. Natural questions are, then, could we check whether a given TA enjoys these properties? These problems are not algorithmically solvable. Minimizing the “resources” of a TA (number of clocks or size of constants) are also unsolvable problems. In this paper we provide simple undecidability proofs using a “constructive” version o...

Universality and Language Inclusion for Open and Closed Timed Automata

The algorithmic analysis of timed automata is fundamentally limited by the undecidability of the universality problem. For this reason and others, there has been considerable interest in restricted classes of timed automata. In this paper we study the universality problem for two prominent such subclasses: open and closed timed automata. This problem is described as open in [6, 8] in the case o...

Reachability Problems on Extended O-Minimal Hybrid Automata

Within hybrid systems theory, o-minimal automata are often considered on the border between decidability and undecidability. In such classes of hybrid automata, the constraint of having only constant reset upon discrete jumps is a strong limitation for their applicability: hence, an important issue for both theoreticians and practitioners, is that of relaxing the above constraint, while not fal...

Using Interval Petri Nets and Timed Automata for Diagnosis of Discrete Event Systems (DES)

A discrete event system (DES) is a dynamic system that evolves in accordance with the abrupt occurrence, at possibly unknown irregular intervals, of physical events. Because of the special nature of these systems, different tools are currently used for their analysis, design and modeling. The main focus of this paper is the presentation of a new modeling approach of Discrete Event Systems. The ...
